IkEcht - songsoverruins (c) 2008
Rotten Crab is a new .net label founded by amongst others Nathan Larson, the man behind the, around here, well-known .net label Dark Winter, and Cordell Klier, known from the same label. "Assemblance Of These", belonging to a trio known as Waterbear, is the first release on Rotten Crab.
They are described as "clang-&-bang guru's", which is a spot-on description, I would say. The record contains five, or actually two songs, as the first, middle and last one are ten seconds of silence each. Only Employing electric guitar and drums, two times twenty minutes of free form, feedback-drenched improvisation is thrown at you. Grating, loud, but surprisingly pleasing to the ear. Especially the fourth song, which during its eightteen-minute only improves. What helps, I think, is that both songs build on a foundation of droning guitar feedback on top of which these gents ardently strum, clatter and rumble.
Strange, normally I am not one to enjoy aimless improvisations, but this is surprisingly well
constructed and really grabs my attention. Those who like drones, post-rock, noise or power-electronics might well appreciate this, methinks. And if this is a sign of what is to come, then I will be keeping an eye on Rotten Crab. An excellent start.
